Did you know that 1 in 10 Canadian men will experience depression at some point in their lives? What about the fact that on average, 8 Canadian men die by suicide each day? It is a major mental health crisis in our country, but increased awareness is a step we can all take to break down the stigma surrounding men’s mental health.
From a young age, men in our society are conditioned to resist expressing emotion and to believe that asking for help is a sign of weakness. Toxic phrases such as “boys don’t cry” and “man up” are all too common, leading to the reluctance many men feel when it comes to seeking mental health resources.
It’s your chance to speak your mind! Submit an entry to our Down with “Man Up” Media Contest by midnight of May 16, 2021. Submissions can be anything from a painting, to a poem, to a video, to a song, focusing on sending a meaningful message about men’s mental health.
We’ll have an event on Saturday, June 5, 2021, to share our pieces and select winners!
